Vale do Lobo
The Algarve's first luxury private tourist resort
At three times the size of Monaco, Vale do Lobo claims to be the biggest and best luxury golf and beach private resort in Europe.
The resort was originally conceived and started by a British entrepeneur, then expanded over several decades by a Dutch owner. It has recently been taken over by a group of mainly Portuguese investors. The new owners are intent on maintaining the reputation for utmost quality and further expanding the diverse range of facilities.
The main square in Vale do Lobo overlooks the beach backed by golden cliffs. This praça has restaurants aplenty and its the perfect place for lunch or an evening meal. Musicians often provide entertainment and during the evenings, under the stars, it has a magical atmosphere.
The 16th hole across red sandstone cliffs on the resort's Royal Course is reputedly the most photographed hole in the whole of Europe. The legendary Henry Cotton designed the original 27 holes of this course. An additional nine holes have since been added and have been remodelled into two exemplary 18-hole course - the Royal and the Ocean golf courses.
Apart from golf, Vale do Lobo is famous for its tennis club and academy, which hosts a veterans' Grand Masters tournament every summer. The English national football team has visited for training as have Liverpool FC and other top European club teams. The resort is also home to Barringtons club, which includes a spa, squash courts and cricket facilities of a sufficiently high standard to attract English test and county teams for training sessions.
